Some stories we hear are so heartwarming and beautiful, we almost think that they’re too good to be true. But, through all of life’s chaos and trouble, some people truly make us believe in love. Like, Jessica and Rich.
Jessica and Rich were two teens in love when, at 19-years-old, Jessica suffered from a bad seizure that caused her memory to be completely wiped clean. The teen was diagnosed with frontal lobe epilepsy years prior and on the way to work one day, suffered a seizure while with her boyfriend.
Although Rich took action right away, the damage was bad enough that some of her memory was completely gone.
Not only did Jessica not know who her boyfriend was, she had no idea who her own parents were. She recalls:
I didn’t know what was going on. Momentary amnesia was normal with seizures. But an hour or so later I saw a woman running towards me and I had no idea who she was.
It was my mum, and I just stared at her blankly.
My world fell apart that day. I was faced with strangers claiming to be my family telling me things about myself that meant nothing to me.
While Jessica’s family used old photographs to prove their identity and share memories, her boyfriend Rich was still a stranger to her. He tried to convince her of their love, but Jessica was skeptical.
Her family left the two alone and allowed them to spend time together, but Jessica was not as quick to warm up to a stranger—even if they had once been in love. Rich even tried taking her to favorite places of theirs, but Jessica could not remember.
He was devastated and adamant we could get back what we had. Seeing how passionate he was convinced me that he must care for me. So I agreed to date him, but made no promises.
After a year of relearning about herself and her life, Jessica says that she feels that she can tackle any challenge that life throws her way. She and Rich are together, and they’re relearning their relationship—making new memories and falling in love all over again.
I have recovered a life for myself with the help of my family, and of course, Rich. I feel so lucky that he knew me well enough to stand by me even when I thought of him as a stranger.
Jessica says that Rich “practically lives at her house now,” and their relationship is growing.
