Mrs. Payne sprang into action when the Chicago Fire Department confiscated propane tanks from a large homeless camp in the downtown area. Leaving over 70 people with no source of heat in frigid temperatures in the minus 20s.
Payne’s fear of the group potentially dying in the frigid cold temps led her to start paying for rooms with her own American Express card.
Payne also inspired friends and strangers online to join in on her efforts.
According to CBS Chicago, Candice and her newly formed group of volunteers have been able to put approximately 70 people in hotel rooms for three days.
The group of volunteers served food to the homeless via a makeshift kitchen in the hotel. The group also collected donated items to help replace the belongings the group of homeless were forced to leave behind at their downtown encampment.
