Gypsy Rose Blanchard, the 27-year old woman that was convicted of second-degree murder for the 2015 murder of her mother, is reportedly engaged to her prison pen pal.

According to PEOPLE, a family friend named Fancy Macelli shared that Gypsy informed family and friends she and her boyfriend are engaged to be married.

“They are very happy,” Macelli said. “You can hear the excitement in her voice.”

It is being reported that the mystery man, whose name is not being released per Blanchard’s wishes, wrote to Blanchard in prison following the release of the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest. The two have known each other for a year and a half and have been dating for some time.

Blanchard is currently serving a 10-year sentence for the murder of her mother in a plot with her boyfriend at the time, Nicholas Godejohn. Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder and is serving life without the possibility of parole.

Blanchard’s mother, Dee Blanchard, suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSbP), “a mental illness in which a person acts as if an individual he or she is caring for has a physical or mental illness when the person is not really sick.”

Blanchard’s family has yet to meet her new fiancé; however, they have plans of meeting him in the next month and say they have talked with him on the phone and through online communication.

Macelli stated that the family approves of the engagement and are very happy for Gypsy.

“[This relationship] is a good thing for her and whether it ends up being that way in the end no one knows, but for her right now it’s a very positive and happy time.”

“She’s 27 years old, she deserves to be in love and she deserves to have somebody who cares about her.”
