Empire star Jussie Smollett was attacked physically and had a rope tied around his neck in what Chicago police are investigating as a hate crime.

According to sources connected to Smollet, the Empire star arrived in Chicago from New York late Monday night. Around 2 AM the actor went to grab a bite to eat and was approached by two men who yelled racist, homophobic slurs at him.

The TMZ source says that the two men draped in ski masks, attacked Jussie Smollett after chiding him with racist, homophobic slurs. Jussie fought back but was still beaten badly. The suspects then put a rope around his neck and poured an “unknown chemical substance” on Smollett before fleeing the scene.

TMZ is also reporting that the suspects yelled “This is MAGA country,” at the victim while fleeing the scene, but police say that this part of the story has not been confirmed.

Smollet drove himself to a nearby hospital for treatment, and police are investigating.

Chicago Police Department spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi had this to say about the incident:

Overnight, the Chicago Police Department received a report of a possible racially-charged assault and battery involving a cast member of the television show Empire. Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime. Detectives are currently working to gather video, identify potential witnesses and establish an investigative timeline. The victim is fully cooperating with investigators and we ask anyone with information about this incident to contact Area Central Detectives at 312-747-8382 or report it anonymously to www.cpdtip.com.
