Many people know Tituss Burgess from his role as Titus Andromedon on Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. This past Sunday the former Netflix star–who is nothing like the character that he’s best known for–interviewed with Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live.”
Things got staticky between the two when Cohen asked Burgess about working with Eddie Murphy in an upcoming film. Cohen asked Burgess if he had gotten “close at all” with Murphy because Eddie Murphy was “very problematic for the gays at one point.”
Cohen was referring to several jokes from Eddie Murphy’s stand-up routines from the ’90s in which the comedian used homophobic rhetoric. Murphy has since apologized.
The line of questioning from Cohen made for a tense moment between the two. Tituss quickly responded with, “Oh, I see. He wasn’t problematic for Tituss,” Burgess continued “We had a wonderful time. We talked about Dreamgirls. He should’ve won the Oscar, I believe.”
After answering the questions about the project with Murphy from Cohen, a visibly frustrated Burgess pushed the conversation along, telling Cohen to “Keep going, girl. Do your show.”
Andy Cohen has yet to respond to the suggestions made by Tituss on Instagram.
